Vocal Mics for Death Metal: April 2017 Subscriber Question of the Month
Shure Notes® email newsletter subscribers submit their burning audio questions every month, and we pick one to publish in the email and here. This month, we explore vocal mic options for death metal.
Kevin in California asked whether Shure vocal mics were metal-worthy:
Does Shure take death metal and other harsh vocal styles into consideration when designing microphones?
Chris from Shure Product Support answered:
While we don't specifically design any mics for any one type of music, our mics are designed to deliver the best clarity for all voices.
From personal experience in mixing live vocals for various forms of metal, hardcore and other forms of extreme rock n' roll, I've had a great deal of success with the BETA 58A®. Its presence peak helps gruff or growling vocals cut through the mix without sacrificing any low end.
For recording, I've found the SM7B is a great choice for aggressive vocals.
That said, so much of this is personal preference. Always try a few different mics before buying, and pick the ones you think sound best.
