The new MV7 Podcasting Microphone has taken the content creation scene by storm since its debut late last year. Find out how its innovative Voice Isolation Technology and Auto Level Mode let you make great recordings in even the most acoustically challenging rooms.
Equipped with both USB and XLR outputs, built-in digital signal processing, mobile and desktop app control plus hardware control, the MV7 has been specifically engineered to give creatives a powerful mic capable of podcasting, streaming, vlogging and much more.
A quick glance at its silhouette will tell you the MV7 was inspired by the SM7B, the classic Shure microphone that’s known for its gorgeously rich treatment of vocals. If you want to dive into how the two mics compare and find out which one is right for you, check out this blog piece here.
In a nutshell, the MV7 is not an SM7B replacement, instead it offers up its own specific feature set optimized for a digital setting in a home studio or on the go. Two of the mic’s defining characteristics are its Voice Isolation Technology and Auto Level Mode. If you want to see these in action, check out this handy instructional video or even observe the MV7 in its natural habitat (aka Loserfruit’s Twitch stream). However, if you want to learn how this amazing tech actually works, keep reading!
Voice Isolation Technology
If you switch from a condenser mic to the MV7, you’ll immediately hear the room drop away as your voice takes center stage. Even if you had your condenser buried in a pillow fort to minimize reverb, the difference when you plug in an MV7 is almost shocking. It’s like, in the blink of an eye, your room was decked out with acoustic paneling, drapes, airlocks and more. But it’s not magic – what you’re hearing is trailblazing engineering at work.
The MV7’s Voice Isolation Technology is a feat of pure acoustic innovation that’s fully independent from any software algorithms or interfaces. It’s a fully passive system of carefully engineered airflow, which means it doesn’t need power to function and audio signals from the mic’s USB and XLR outputs both benefit.
At the core of the MV7 sits a cartridge built specifically for use at home, designed to keep as much room sound out as possible. The mic also has a frequency response that emphasizes vocal clarity and provides fantastic rear rejection, particularly for frequencies 1 kHz and below. That means the MV7 is naturally insensitive to the low rumblings that cause the worst background noise – like humming air conditioners or incessant street traffic. It’s also highly effective at eliminating the reverb that attacks from all angles when your voice bounces off bare walls, ceilings and floors.
Auto Level Mode
With the microphone’s hardware taking care of your signal, all that’s left is to make sure your voice is mixed exactly the way you want it. To make your life as easy as possible, the MV7 interfaces with mobile and desktop ShurePlus apps. On those platforms, you can adjust microphone gain, EQ, compressors and limiters to set your levels and tone just right.
However, recording on your own means you might not always have the brain space to devote to your mix. That’s why the MV7 offers you Auto Level Mode, which automatically manages all of those variables in real-time without asking you to lift a finger. Every single sample (48,000 per second) is monitored in Auto Level Mode, so you can choose your settings once and never think about them again. In Auto Level Mode, Near/Far settings mediate the proximity affect, while Bright/Natural/Dark options manage your tone, all while normalizing your gain for a smooth, consistent signal.
